North Carolina Bald Cypresses Are Among the World’s Oldest Trees

On May 9th 2019, University of Arkansas researcher Dr. David Stahle announced he has discovered the 5th oldest tree species in the world, on property The Nature Conservancy recently purchased in Bladen County. The Nature Conservancy protects over 19,000 acres along the Black River which is home to some of the oldest trees in the world. These ancient bald cypress swamps have seen so much- hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts and floods. "You look up and see these ancient trees draped in Spanish moss," says The Nature Conservancy's Angie Carl. "It is like you are in a whole other world".
