South Atlantic Third Thursday Web Forum: The Longleaf ARC Project Update

Update on the Longleaf ARC Project: Accelerating conservation of at-risk species in the longleaf system, Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 10 a.m. by Brian Crawford, Post-Doctoral Researcher at the University of Georgia.

The longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) ecological system supports many priority at-risk species designated for review for listing under the Endangered Species Act, including five species of herpetofauna: the gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus), gopher frog (Lithobates capito), striped newt (Notophthalmus perstriatus), southern hognose snake (Heterodon simus), and Florida pine snake (Pituophis melanoleucus mugitus). With federal, state, and other partners, this project is assessing the statuses of these five at-risk species to inform where and how to invest conservation resources. This collaborative work addresses three objectives: 1) synthesize species data and expert knowledge from previous research, monitoring, and management efforts, 2) develop comprehensive, range-wide models of current species distribution and persistence, and 3) predict distribution and persistence in the next 100 years under scenarios incorporating potential threats and management activities. The webinar will provide a clear vision of the modeling and broader conservation planning approach for this project.
